This morning I went for an "until I find something interesting" walk.  This neighborhood rock garden qualifies.  There's a lot going on here.

A front lawn rock garden with hand painted rocks and many tchotchkes
Picture is of a busy rock garden in a front yard.  There are dozens of hand painted rocks, balanced rocks, outdoor tchotchkes and careful arrangements.

I don't know the etiquette either. On my regular walk there's a yard in which the occupiers have built a double artificial waterfall full of artfully placed rocks and lots of native plants. Both sides of the waterfall empty into a patch of gravel next to the sidewalk (presumably to be pumped back up again by an underground mechanism) and to one side of this patch there is a little marble bench. I've never sat on it to admire the moving water, because even though it's right by the sidewalk I don't know if it's an invitation or not.

I was thinking that if I had a rock garden like that I'd put a bench where one could sit and contemplate it; but if it wasn't my garden I'm still not sure I'd think of it as an invitation to random strangers to sit down.
