Pumpkin Ale

There was a shortage of canned pumpkin because of some sort of crop failure last year. Somehow that shortage has been solved, and pumpkin is now again available for sale.
We made Pumpkin Ale last year, and it was insufficiently pumpkiny. This time, we increased the amount of pumpkin. We used three fifteen ounce cans instead of two. Hopefully that will solve the problem.
Tomorrow, I will need to use up all the spent grains I've got. I thought that I would have leftover pumpkin, but "Good Taste" brand canned pumpkin is a much finer gauge of pumpkin than the Libby's that we used last year. Almost all of it worked its way through the muslin bag to the wort.
I am slightly bummed to realize that we don't have anything that is worthy of submission to the State Fair this year. I didn't really plan for it, and I've only got the basics of original recipes figured out, so that's that. Next year, we should easily be able to submit a few different styles. The submission deadline for 2010 is August 6. Information about styles and categories is here. Unfortunately, many of the links are broken. There's a bit more here. If I were worried about getting a submission in this year, I would pursue the issue of broken links a bit more thoroughly.
I tentatively plan to submit one dark ale, one light ale, and one lager. For the lager, I think I've got the Elephant beer close to figured out, but it needs to wait for winter because lagers need cold temperatures to ferment.
