Here's the Beer Update for January 31, 2010. In all honesty, these posts are so that I have a record, but I don't mind if you read them too.

Yesterday we moved the Wurtzberger Maibock to the cold closet, and brewed Excelsior Altbier. Sitting on the cement floor under the front steps, the current temperature of the Lager is 48 degrees, which is nearly perfect. It will be bottled once it warms up outside, probably around the middle of March.

The Excelsior Altbier was made with non-standard yeast, we used the Safbrew T-58. If it's 'off,' that will be my first suspicion, but it will be an interesting experiment either way. It's a Belgian style yeast, which is a slightly peppery flavor (think Fat Tire.) I think it will go well with the German style recipe, but we'll see. Historically, Germans and Belgians get along most of the time, and they've even joined forces within the worlds of Beer, and annoying Africa. Most of Western Europe has been in on that second one.

On Friday night we bottled the Irish Red Ale. Today we bottled the Hex Nut Brown Ale. There's a bottleneck of bottles coming, we have only two cases of empties right now, plus a few more. One 5 gallon recipe is about 54 bottles worth.

As always, I would still appreciate any non-screw-top beer bottles you folks can bear to part with.

The early part of convention season is almost upon us, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to scare up some empty bottles there. I might pick up another case of empties this week.

Next weekend, we will brew a Copper Ale. After that, the next Kit-of-the-Month will be the Octane IPA. There will probably be something in between, I'm leaning towards the Superior Strong Ale or the Honey Bee Ale, but it's just some early thoughts right now.

Opinions cheerfully considered, of course. We're now getting into the beginning of whatever will be shared during the early summer, up to the July convention season.
