This might come as a shock, but it turns out that there's oil involved. At least one reporter has called the region "Pipelineistan"
I know this might be a point of contention, but I think that killing three children per day is not worth having to suffer the inconvenience of legislating that auto manufacturers be required to develop electric vehicles, but maybe that's just my radical leftist extremism talking.
It's not covered in that article, but it is my opinion that Afghanistan is also an important locale in the control of the drug trade.
